Bruxism, or grinding and clenching your teeth, is a serious habit that many people have. It can lead to TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders, attrition (wearing away) of the teeth, tooth sensitivity, and various other problems. A conservative treatment option is to wear a nightguard. It is an acrylic, retainer-like appliance worn at night that protects your teeth from the forces of grinding. Like a custom mouthguard, an impression of your teeth is done and used to fabricate the nightguard. Once it is ready, return to the office for a second visit to try it on and make any adjustments to ensure it fits comfortably. Similarly, a sportsguard can be made to protect teeth and jaw joints from trauma that may be sustained while playing contact sports, which is a crucial component of concussion prevention.
